I have been an avid reader my entire life. I still vividly ​remember the day I read my first book without anyone's help and also without reciting it from memory and pretending I was reading. It was one of the Dick and Jane books, and I was sitting under our carport one hot Louisiana summer day. My pulse quickened at the newfound power and confidence it gave me. So began my lifelong love affair with words—those I read and those I put to paper myself.
